The best thing about procrastinating
...isn't in your favour, but in the favour of others. While your still thinking about it, other people are already living it. The only reason why you haven't taken massive action towards a goal you've set, is because you haven't made it a must.
LETS DISSECT THIS. WIKEPEDIA SAYS:
"In psychology, procrastination refers to the act of replacing high-priority actions with tasks of lower priority, or doing something from which one derives enjoyment, and thus putting off important tasks to a later time."
"Proactive behavior involves acting in advance of a future situation, rather than just reacting. It means taking control and making things happen rather than just adjusting to a situation or waiting for something to happen."
EVERYTHING YOU FOLLOW THROUGH ON HAS BEEN PRIORITISED
AS A MUST
Think about it. You must hand in an assignment on a particular day and particular time. Even though you have had 2-3 weeks to do it, you did it the night before and still managed to pass. We've all been there. Or have you ever met someone who loves health and fitness? Perhaps they've had a huge weight loss change for the better and have maintained that lifestyle? It's because they've put eating healthy nutrtion and exercise in the frame of life or death.
Another example is paying bills. Your phone bill comes once a month and somehow you manage to meet the payments. You know it's coming up so you plan in advance to avoid the pain of being in debt and continue the pleasure of being connected.
HOW DOES THIS AFFECT ME AS A DESIGNER?
In order to survive and thrive as a designer, you've got to be disciplined and organised. However I'm not just talking about deadlines.
I'm talking about raising your standards.
If you look at the most successful designers and creatives in the world, there is one thing they all have in common:
They take immediate action.
In this way, we can look at success as "the sum of small actions repeated day in day out".
A NEW PERSPECTIVE:
The next time you feel the poison of procrastination creeping in, ask yourself one question:
What will it cost me if I don't do this?
Look at how it will effect the quality of your life and your future; financially, emotionally, spiritually, physically and mentally.
Once you put more weight on how painful it will be if you DON'T take action, the less you'll be a slave to procrastinating.
What other ways has helped you take immediate action?
