How jumping in puddles of mud increases your creativity

Do you remember the last time you did this? For most of us it was probably a year or two after our first steps. We pushed our little walking wobblers and soon discovered our ability of speed explosions from standing still to lightning fast Usain Bolt style. Zero to a hundred in 1 second (well that’s how it felt racing to mum when she had our nutella sandwiches ready).

Do you remember jumping in puddles of mud when it rained? Not a care in the world if your socks would get soggy or your pants would get dirty or what people would think of you.
When did we become so discriminating towards puddle jumping? Are we too good for the puddles? Or have we simply taken life too seriously that even the reassurance of an effective washing machine and dryer isn’t enough to put us at ease?

IN ORDER TO INCREASE CREATIVITY YOU MUST LET GO:
  1. Let go of what people think
  2. Let go of limitations
  3. Let go of worrying
  4. Let go of being perfect first time around

“The essential part of creativity is not being afraid to fail.”
— Edwin H. Land

KILL REALISTIC. BE CHILD-LIKE. BE FREE:
  1. Be free and let your imagination run wild
  2. Be free and non-apologetic of your curiousness
  3. Be free and restless
  4. Be free and realise, that the only person stopping you from being extraordinary, is you.
“There’s a way to do it better—find it.”
— Thomas Edison

CREATIVITY IS A JOURNEY NOT A DESTINATION:
The measure of creativity in design isn’t if you’ve executed the brief one dimensionally and have crafted the most visually appealing work in the universe. It’s in fact the process you took in solving the problem.
That’s one half. The other is actually gaining concrete results by delivering work appealing enough for a shift in the target audiences’ behaviour. If you’ve designed an outdoor pop up promotion, it’s easy to make noise and “put on a show”. You could design fancy giveaways, have neon lights, hire attractive women, use a mascot throwing confetti, play loud music, use props, the ideas are endless. But, without a clear strategy and strong pay off for your audience to quickly move to your call to action, you become a Z-list version of Cirque du Soleil.
That cleverness, charm, simplicity and innovation you’re after comes from exploration, experimentation and research. Remember to craft with relevance. Ask yourself “What am I trying to say first” then comes “How am I going to say it?”.
“Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody has thought.”
— Albert von Szent-Gyorgy

TAKE THAT LEAP:
I’ve always believed that the only thing we can control are our own actions.
When designing, be dictated by that very freedom.

I’d love to know what other ways of thinking you find increases your creativity?
