Opportunity Goes Where Opportunity Is Welcome

If you were to leave a freshly baked, European inspired, chocolate infused, perfectly balanced, magically moist mud cake with a side of strawberries and love, out in the open overnight in your back yard, be prepared to be arrested by the patisserie police. You’ll be inviting the very best of the rodent army. The same goes for opportunity. Admittedly, there will always be things out of our control. Mainly mother nature, people (and rodents). However, to a large extent, we really do invite most of which occurs in our life.

Think about the last time you didn’t get what you paid for. That tear in your new jacket ordered online or restaurant food that has come out cold. You likely banished them both back to where they came from because it wasn’t good enough. Poor service wasn’t welcome.
When I completed design college, I was astonished by the power of a word, a click, a hand shake, a smile, a story (and this was even before the launch of twitter and Facebook). This astonishment quickly paired up with a heightened level of apprehension towards clutter. I realised that every piece of design I released into the world could either work for me or against me.
FOUR WAYS TO MULTIPLY YOUR OPPORTUNITY:

1. Plant seeds (not mud cake)
Meet as many industry-related people as possible, or even like-minded people who think innovatively, creatively and passionately about what they do. Soon you’ll be bearing ripe fruit and basking in the sweetness.

2. Put out the bait (ideally the fresh, tasty stuff!)
Post your best work and have a real presence. Add your work to portfolio websites such as behance and the loop and also launch your own personal portfolio site. Your reach is endless and open 24 hours.

3. Establish your expertise
Your personal brand as a designer or creative will fall into a specific service market. There’s a saying “you’re only as good as you’re last race”. That’s where the opportunity lies. When you’ve proven time and time again that you’ve done it before, the client has confidence in your delivery. If you haven’t done it before, it doesn’t at all mean you can’t. Of course you can. It just means you require more research, experience and guidance.

“Don’t bunt. Aim out of the ball park. Aim for the company of immortals.” – David Ogilvy

4. Attitude of gratitude
No one likes a boastful show-off. Having a sense of gratefulness will only do wonders for your opportunity. It shows others you are pleasant and well-grounded.
There are a million ways to get to the same place, the challenge is finding the route which excites you the most.

What other ways has helped you create opportunities?
