The 14 day designer’s challenge: 14 minutes for 14 days

Like all of you busy giant thinkers, I sometimes get caught up with little things and suddenly find the day is quickly over. I may not have gotten around to what I really wanted to accomplish that day. There’s a saying “in order to have more time, make more time”. So I decided to create the 14 day Designer’s Challenge.

WHAT IS THIS CHALLENGE?
For 14 minutes for 14 days you MUST do something that moves you closer to your goal. (Read post “Do It Or Don’t, But Do It With All Your Heart” about goal setting).
No excuses. No matter what mood you’re in or how you’re feeling. You must commit to 14 days of unwavering, uncompromising dedication to the task you’ve chosen.
For me, I made a promise to myself to write 14 blog posts in a row. I may not necessarily publish all of them in a row, but at least they are written. And if you think 14 minutes is not enough then by all means ride the wave. Keep that momentum going. My posts take me between 1-2 hours, but when I start something, I need to finish it.

‘CHALLENGE’ IDEAS:
I suggest you focus on one challenge for 14 days rather than doubling up. You can always use this method to attack your other goals.
Here are some ideas that you can do for 14 minutes daily for 14 days:

  • Read at least 14 minutes worth of that book you always wanted to
  • Watch 14 minutes worth of TED talks, documentaries or tutorials you always wished you had time to
  • Mock up all your own personal design work finally ready to photograph as a clean, professional portfolio.
  • Research what makes a strong and effective resume and begin improving yours.
  • Send one email a day to all your favourite and most inspiring designers, creative directors, agencies, studios and bloggers about work they’ve done and ask them any questions about it. You can even as for advice. The key is to start the conversation and begin networking.
  • Start 14 minutes of your day by bouncing through design blogs and creative portfolios. You will be incredibly inspired, constantly. It should begin to make you itch and start creating all those projects you’ve been putting off.
  • 14 minute exercise speed drills every morning. Quick short sprint, 15 push ups, 15 squats, 15 sit ups, 15 chin ups, 1 minute break then do that all over again as fast as you can, then repeat everything again etc until 14 minutes is over. A good way to clear your mind and get more energy. Your health and fitness is crucial to your success.

‘CHALLENGE’ RESULTS:
At the very least, after the 14 minutes for 14 days in a row of doing something you’ve always wanted to make time for, you’ve actually progressed leaps and bounds towards a goal, if not completed it entirely.
I mean think about, 14 minutes can be found in anything. Turn off the TV, get off Facebook, twitter and instagram for a moment, take quicker showers, look at yourself in the mirror less. Whatever it is, you can surely commit to 14 minutes each day to doing something productive.
If you don’t see a positive change after the 14 days then never do it again. But if you do it properly with 100% total commitment to following through, then you surely will.
You may even continue it on past 14 days. Oh how terrible that would be for you to improve your lifestyle and become more successful.
Life is for the living. Let the challenge begin.

Are you up for it? I’d love to know!
